Comcast launches Xfinity Mobile unlimited plan. Comcast

Comcast launched its $65 Xfinity mobile plan for its existing customers Wednesday.

Comcast, which introduced Xfinity Mobile last month, said it hopes the new plan complements current options for its customers. The plan isn’t expected to have a major impact on mobile carriers, like T-Mobile and Sprint, since the plan is only available to Xfinity customers. For cellular service, Xfinity Mobile will draw from Verizon’s existing wireless network.

What’s Included In The Xfinity Mobile Plan?

The Comcast pay-as-you-go plan comes with unlimited talk and text for $65 a month to Comcast customers, but it is currently offering a $45 discounted price (offer ends July 31). The plan starts off with 100 MB of shared data per month. Comcast gives Xfinity customers the ability to add cellular service without charging line access fees on as many as five lines.

Customers also have a monthly 4G LTE data option of paying “by the gig.” That alternative costs $12 per gigabyte, and subscribers can pay for just the gigabyte of shared data used each month. Comcast will help users stay on top of their data usage by letting customers track how much data they have used and by setting data usage alerts on the Xfinity mobile app.

Apart from the Verizon cell tower signal, the plan also gives customers access to 16 million Xfinity current Wi-Fi hotspots. Xfinity automatically will connect to Comcast’s existing Wi-Fi hotspots and will switch to Verizon network when it is out of range. The technique works to cut down data costs if you’re on the $12 GB plan.

"We’re doing mobile differently by bringing our customers the best networks and a product designed to save them money in an increasingly data-driven world," Comcast Mobile President Greg Butz said in April. "Mobility is more important than ever to consumers, so we’ve designed Xfinity Mobile the way mobile should be — a simple solution for internet and entertainment in and out of the home."

There is also flexibility with the Comcast plan. Families will be able to mix-and-match on an account and pick which plan works best for each person. Individuals can also switch back and forth among plans.

“If customers find that they’ve used more data on a 'by the gig' option one month, they can switch to 'unlimited' for that month, then switch back the next month with no penalties,” Comcast explained.

New customers will have to buy a device to get in the Xfinity Mobile plan. The Comcast plans include phones from Apple, Samsung and LG so far. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is available for $30 a month or a one-time payment of $732 while the 32 GB iPhone 7 Plus costs $32 a month or $770 when it ships.

While Comcast launches Xfinity Mobile, it’s also preparing to launch Xfinity Instant TV for cable cord-cutters later this year.
