CD Projekt RED’s upcoming RPG “Cyberpunk 2077” seems like it’s going to be another blockbuster title from the makers of the highly acclaimed “The Witcher” series. And if the words of one of the developers are any indication, it’s going to be nothing but a real winner.

In an interview with Spanish outlet AreaJugones, “Cyberpunk 2077” quest director Mateusz Tomaskiewicz spoke about how the Polish game studio is working to make the game memorable to players, adding that they haven’t shown everything about the game just yet. The interview is in Spanish, but an English translation can be found in Reddit.

According to Tomaskiewicz, “Cyberpunk 2077” is primarily an RPG game with first-person shooter mechanics added into the mix. While there have been a variety of third-person RPGs including their older title “The Witcher 3,” “Cyberpunk 2077” is a first that promises a totally different kind of gameplay.

FPS meets RPG

He said the FPS element changes the way RPGs are played because first, it’s a shooter; while second, it has all sorts of RPG mechanics still in play. Tomaskiewicz said the FPS element makes the game more immersive compared to other RPGs.

For example, all dialogues are done in first-person perspective, as if it’s the player having a conversation. During scenes, players will have the opportunity to interact with or look at the surroundings as if they are in the game, making for a totally immersive gaming experience.

“We are trying to develop it the most immersive way it could be because is 'you' who is interacting with the world,” Tomaskiewicz said. “Being the engine of what is happening in the game.”

What makes it unique?

Now, there have been a variety of first-person shooters that allowed players to look around and interact with their surroundings. What makes “Cyberpunk 2077” different?

The quest dev said the whole development team is working on incorporating a myriad of elements normally found in the RPG and FPS game genres. Not all FPS and RPG games have that.

These elements include combat mechanics, a good storyline, and of course, being an RPG with FPS mechanics, a wide selection of guns to choose from, acquire, or upgrade.

“Also, I think that in terms of gameplay we have some ideas and things that are not ready yet and that we are trying to implement, because they will be very good.”
