An Indianapolis man has admitted to shaking his 4-month-old son to death as he was frustrated with the infant's crying, according to an arrest affidavit.

The unresponsive baby was rushed to a hospital in critical condition Friday after the suspect identified as Brandon Herring, 22, called 911 to report that his son was not breathing. Herring initially reported to the emergency officers that he needs assistance with a choking child at his apartment in S. Pennsylvania. The infant who had no brain activity was taken off life support and died two days later, CBS 4 Indy reported.

A medical examination indicated the child's death was caused by abusive head trauma and the infant suffered bleeding consistent with being shaken, WTHR reported.

Herring was initially charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury but is expected to have his charges upgraded after the child's death.

According to the arrest records, the infant's mother, Savannah Thompson, left her son under her husband's care while she went out for work Friday.

During the interrogation, Herring initially denied harming the child. However, he later admitted that he was frustrated with the child as he would not stop crying and shook him before dropping him on the floor.

“It’s unbearable. I would not want any parent to go through what I’ve been through, to see my baby the way he was,” the grieving mother said, as reported by CBS4.

“You know he didn’t even get a chance at life. He didn’t even get an opportunity. I won’t get to take him to kindergarten or have his first birthday,” Thompson added.

Herring is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

In June, a New Mexico mother was sentenced to 12 years in jail for the 2018 death of her 7-week-old daughter. The little girl had died of brain hemorrhage and shaken baby syndrome. Carcia Ceballos of Las Cruces was sentenced after she was found guilty of intentional or reckless abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm. A medical examination determined that the malnourished infant suffered from severe bilateral retinal hemorrhage in both eyes and global hypoxic brain injury during her death.
