In a bizarre incident, a dead man's body that was dumped near a hospital in India became food for the pigs roaming the area.

People who live nearby found pigs eating the decomposed body of a man in the western state of Maharashtra.

They were shocked to find some pigs carrying chunks of a human's body. When they went to inspect the nearby area, they found the body in the drain located outside the hospital.

The body was found near the Nanded-based Dr Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. It remains unclear how and who dumped the body inside the drain, Times Now reported.

The people then informed authorities about the incident. The hospital staff and a police team reached the scene and took the body out of the drain. The corpse was then sent for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The unidentified body is believed to be that of a man over 30-years-old.

"The police are looking into the matter," Nanded district official Vipin Itankar told the Times of India.

The cause of death will be revealed after the autopsy, and a case of accidental death has also been filed.

"The body was found outside the hospital premises and we suspect that it was lying in the nullah (drain) for about 24 hours before being spotted," Dr Sudhi Deshmukh, the dean of the hospital said. Other details about the incident are yet to be revealed.

Last year, a 4-year-old boy playing outside his home in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad was dragged away by a herd of pigs and mauled to death. The child's parents were inside the hut when he was attacked by the pigs. Residents passing by the area found the child lying near a garbage dump. When they went closer to inspect, they found the boy's partially-eaten body. The police were informed about the incident, and the child's body was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead.
