KEY POINTS

  • Bungie is conducting a "Destiny 2" event featuring the game's buggiest gun
  • Telesto has changed firing modes twice in two days
  • A free emblem code is being given away as a memento for the event

Telesto, the buggiest gun in the history of "Destiny 2," is at the forefront of a bizarre augmented reality event that spilled onto Bungie's social media channels, and fans are equal parts amused and confused.

Recently, the official "Destiny 2" Twitter account was "hijacked" by the exotic Void fusion rifle, which claims to have transcended space-time and achieved sentience. So far, the gun has only spouted a series of self-aware tweets, but fans believe there is more to come.

"Destiny 2" itself was hit by the gun's fourth-wall-breaking antics. Players who would log in to the game would be greeted by a wall of "Telesto" text and a message that says, "I am in control."

Destiny 2 Telesto event
Telesto took over Destiny 2 as well as the game's official Twitter account in November 2022 Destiny 2

Before all of this, Guardians believed that the gun was bugged again. Instead of firing its usual random spray of explosive Void bolts, Telesto would fire its projectiles in patterns that mimicked constellations, and the bolts would slowly move in an upward curve instead of their usual forward trajectory.

This behavior riled the player base before the big Twitter reveal. Then, the gun changed again. Telesto's bolts began bouncing off hard surfaces before exploding instead of sticking onto whatever target they hit.

Meta-breaking references aside, Bungie uploaded a code for a player emblem card called "Schrödinger's Gun" on the "Destiny 2" Twitter account. This emblem was actually datamined at the start of Season 18, but the players merely accepted it as a reference to Telesto's buggy nature. Despite the obvious sign, almost nobody in the community saw this event coming.

No one knows what Telesto has in store for "Destiny 2's" foreseeable future, as even Bungie's latest TWAB held no information regarding the rogue gun apart from a cry for help.

Fans still have the rest of November to grind out what's left of "Season of Plunder." The second and final week of Iron Banner is due to arrive in the coming days, and it'll be the last chance for PvP players to grind for that Iron Lord title before the next season arrives.

Season 19 is expected to go live in the first week of December.
