Prince Edward is rumored to inherit the title of Duke of Edinburgh when his father passes away.

On the online forum site Quora, netizens discussed whether or not Queen Elizabeth promised to give the title to her son with Prince Charles’ approval. Others are convinced that Prince Edward is assumed to receive the current title of Prince Philip because of his interest and involvement in his dad’s projects.

Dave Rowlands, a monarchist and royal history buff, said that the Queen most likely sought Prince Charles approval to give his younger brother the title.

“The Dukedom of Edinburgh was created by Letters Patent which state that it is to be inherited by the male heirs of the body of the first holder. These Letters Patent have the force of law and having been issued can only be revoked by an Act of Parliament,” he said.

Rowlands went on to explain that following Prince Philip’s death, the dukedom will actually be inherited by Prince Charles. And when Prince Charles is crowned as King, the dukedom will merge with the crown, which means that it will cease to exist. At that point, the dukedom would have to be recreated by the current monarch so that it may be passed on to Prince Edward.

Meanwhile, Prince Edward received a different title from Her Majesty on his 55th birthday. The dad of two is now officially known as the Earl of Forfar. His wife, Sophie, is now known as Countess of Forfar. However, Prince Edward and his wife will only be referred to as such when they visit certain places in the United Kingdom.

It has been said that Prince Edward is only known as Earl and not Duke like his older brothers because he refused the royal title of Duke after he wed Sophie. The couple’s children, Lady Louise Windsor, and James, Viscount Severn, didn’t also receive the title of Princess and Prince, respectively.
