In a horrific incident, a 13-year-old boy in England was bitten by a dog in a park, causing major injury to his face.

The Cheshire police told media outlet Cheshire Live the teenager was attacked by an "unknown, medium-sized, dark-colored dog" in Bank Park in Warrington on Jan. 3. The dog was not on a leash, and ran away from the scene after attacking the teenager. The owner of the dog was also not present at the scene.

The victim was with a family member, walking their own dog, when the attack took place. It remains unclear as to how the dog that attacked the boy reached the park.

"The victim received a significant injury to his face. The dog was off the lead and ran off after the incident, no owner was present. Please be aware, and ensure if you're a dog owner, it's kept under control in all public places," the police said in a statement, Cheshire Live reported.

The boy was taken to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool where he received treatment. The condition of the boy remains unclear.

An investigation is underway into the incident and police are trying to locate the canine and its owner. However, as of Sunday, there was no trace of the dog or its owner.

In a similar incident last month, a 13-year-old girl in Chicago was badly injured following an attack by her neighbor's pit bulls in an alley next to her house. The pit bulls allegedly reached the alley through a garage and mauled the girl. Hearing the girl scream, the owner of the dogs came out of his house, and saw his canines attacking the girl. In a bid to save the teenager, he shot the dogs.

In November, a man was attacked by his girlfriend's pit bull in their Florida home. The dog attacked the victim when his girlfriend touched him on his arm to wake him up. The man lost an ear and received several injuries on his arms and legs in the attack. The dog was placed in a 10-day quarantine following the incident.
