  • Donald Trump's speech is deteriorating

Donald Trump was recently lambasted after he struggled to properly pronounce the word “sanctuary” at the State of the Union address.

Twitter user @atrupar uploaded a video of the POTUS, and it is evident that he pronounced the word sanctuary as “stankuary.” Of course, his critics took this as an opportunity to make fun of Melania Trump’s husband.

“Have you all noticed Trump slurring certain words? Someone forgot to use their denture cream before taking the stage,” Twitter user @BethW_NoTrump said.

“Trump slurs more words than I do and I’m drunk,” Twitter user @ceye said.

“Low Energy Trump. Slurring words here and there. So angry at Democrats,” Twitter user @deannaveg said.

Meanwhile, Trump wasn’t always linguistically challenged. In fact, he was previously considered a good speaker. But over the years, his speaking style has changed, which may be a result of his cognitive decline.

Researchers and experts in neurolinguistics all agreed that there seems to be a deterioration when it comes to the POTUS’s speech, and this may something to do with his brain’s health.

During his interviews between the 1980s and the 1990s, Trump reportedly spoke articulately, and he also made use of sophisticated vocabulary. He never lost his train of thought, and his sentences were polished.

In recent years, the POTUS’s vocabulary has become much simpler. He also tends to repeat his thoughts over and over.

While speaking with Stat News, Ben Michaelis, a psychologist from New York City, said that there are indeed some clear changes in Trump as a speaker. He said that there has been a clear reduction of the POTUS’s linguistic sophistication over time, and he also tends to use very simple words and sentence structure. But all this may be a result of his old age.

“In fairness to Trump, he’s 70, so some decline in his cognitive functioning over time would be expected,” he said.

Michaelis also said that Trump’s choice of words and the way he speaks may be an intentional move from the president who thinks that this is what his supporters want from him.

“He may be using it as a strategy to appeal to certain types of people," he said.
