Director of National Intelligence (DNI) James Clapper testifies to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing on "Russia’s intelligence activities" on Capitol Hill in Washington, Jan. 10, 2017. Reuters

The director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said he spoke with Donald Trump Wednesday night to reassure him after a highly sensitive document alleging that Russia is blackmailing the president-elect was leaked to the media. In a statement, Clapper said he assured Trump that the intelligence community "stands ready to serve his administration."

"I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press, and we both agreed that they are extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security," Clapper said.

Clapper said the report published by BuzzFeed Tuesday night does not reflect U.S. intel. He noted that the document has not been verified and that U.S officials "did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions."

His remarks come as U.S. intelligence officials have sought to build a relationship with Trump after the president-elect has denounced U.S. intelligence assessments that Russia hacked leading Democrats during the 2016 election to help him win.

Clapper's full statement reads: "This evening, I had the opportunity to speak with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss recent media reports about our briefing last Friday. I expressed my profound dismay at the leaks that have been appearing in the press, and we both agreed that they are extremely corrosive and damaging to our national security. We also discussed the private security company document, which was widely circulated in recent months among the media, members of Congress and Congressional staff even before the IC became aware of it. I emphasized that this document is not a U.S. Intelligence Community product and that I do not believe the leaks came from within the IC. The IC has not made any judgment that the information in this document is reliable, and we did not rely upon it in any way for our conclusions. However, part of our obligation is to ensure that policymakers are provided with the fullest possible picture of any matters that might affect national security.President-elect Trump again affirmed his appreciation for all the men and women serving in the Intelligence Community, and I assured him that the IC stands ready to serve his Administration and the American people."

The document published by BuzzFeed Tuesday reflects a collection of memos that allege Trump is being blackmailed by Russia over foreign policy deals and alleged sexual antics, including hiring prostitutes to urinate one each other, an act known as a golden shower.

“BuzzFeed News is publishing the full document so that Americans can make up their own minds about allegations about the president-elect that have circulated at the highest levels of the US government,” the site wrote in a preamble to its story. And in a memo to staff about the decision, BuzzFeed News editor Ben Smith said: "our presumption is to be transparent in our journalism and to share what we have with our readers. We have always erred on the side of publishing."
