President Donald Trump's newfound but fleeting edge in battleground states might not count for much if Joe Biden's advantage everywhere else proves insurmountable.

The latest CNN poll conducted May 7 to 10 by SRSS showed Biden leading Trump, 51% to 46%, as the presidential candidate of choice nationwide. Trump, on the other hand, has a 52% to 45% advantage over Biden in the 15 battleground states as defined in this poll. These battleground or swing states are Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

As was expected, partisan support for each candidate remained strong. The poll showed 95% of both Democrats and Republicans backing their man. In contrast, 50% of Independents support Trump compared to 46% for Biden.

Biden continued to show strength among most major demographics. He leads Trump 55% to 41% among women, 69% to 26% among people of color and 49% to 46% among those under age 45.

The Democratic candidate also held a 6% lead over Trump among voters over 45. He also has a lead among voters age 65 and older, a group favoring Republican in recent presidential elections.

Biden has the advantage as the candidate more trusted to handle the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic (51% to 45%) and healthcare (54% to 42%).

Biden also beats Trump across five of six attributes perceived necessary to a president. His advantage is largest on which candidate would unite the country and not divide it (55% to 38%). Biden also leads in being honest and trustworthy (53% to 38%).

The former vice president is seen as caring more about people (54% to 42%), is better able to manage government effectively (52% to 45%) and is more trusted during a crisis (51% to 45%). The only presidential attribute Trump was lauded for was stamina and sharpness to be president (49% Trump, 46% Biden).

Among the registered voters, 55% confessed to an unfavorable view of Trump while 46% felt negatively about Biden. The Democrat is the clear favorite among the 14% of voters who say they have a negative impression of both Trump and Biden. In this group, 71% said they'd vote for Biden and 19% for Trump.

Trump remains strong among male voters (50% to 46%) and among male and female whites (55% to 43%). Trump's biggest lead over Biden comes on his handling of the economy, with 54% of voters saying they trust the president to better handle the economy compared to 42% for the latter.
