Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock
Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) visits returning character El Halcon (Jon Huertas) in the trailer for Season 5 finale of “Elementary.” CBS

The trailer for this week’s Season 5 finale of “Elementary” reveals the return of “This Is Us” star Jon Huertas to the CBS series.

Huertas is reprising his role as Mara Tres leader El Halcon in the episode. In the trailer, Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) pays El Halcon a visit after the private investigator finds out that a group of his men violently gate-crashed a gathering of a rival gang.

“Three men who attacked the party had very distinctive facial tattoos,” Sherlock tells El Halcon in the preview clip.

El Halcon admits that it was his men who attacked the party, but insists that the attack was retaliation for what the rival gang did to his sister. It’s unclear who the rival gang is, but because “Elementary” is seemingly ending its SBK storyline in the finale, it’s likely that the gang who harmed El Halcon’s sister was none other than SBK.

Huertas made his series debut as smuggler and drug dealer El Halcon in Season 5, episode 2. In the episode, El Halcon hired Sherlock to track down who killed Rey Torres and three of his other men. Sherlock took the job, but in return, he asked El Halcon to give him the name of another drug dealer who had been selling heroin laced with fentanyl that had already killed 12 people including a woman he knew.

At the end of the episode, Sherlock found out that Wayne Vachs (Ron Rifkin) was the one behind the murders of El Halcon’s men. Although El Halcon was not able to kill Wayne to avenge the deaths of his men, Mara Tres agreed to keep its distance from Sherlock and his partner Joan (Lucy Liu), allowing their lives to return to normal.

While live-tweeting the episode, co-executive producer and writer Robert Hewitt Wolfe gushed about Huertas and wrote that he would love to see the actor reprise his role as El Halcon in the future.

Huertas responded to Wolfe’s tweet, revealing that he would also like to return to the CBS series at some point in the future.

As the NYPD tries to stop the gang war, Sherlock and Joan — as revealed in the synopsis for the finale — continue to look for evidence that will prove that Tyus Wilcox (Stephen Rider) is the leader of SBK.

“Everything that happened these last few days is because of you,” Tyus tells Joan over the phone in the trailer.

“It’s also the reason you’re going to prison,” Joan replies.

The trailer also reveals that Shinwell was killed because someone from SBK found Joan’s number in his phone. Also in the preview clip, Sherlock is worried that the one responsible for Shinwell’s murder might get away from it. “He’s a cold blooded killer and he’s going to get away from everything,” an upset Sherlock says in the video.

Also in the finale, viewers will learn more about Joanna Christie’s character who was introduced in last week’s episode.

“Elementary” Season 5 finale, titled “Hurt Me, Hurt You,” airs on Sunday, May 21 at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS. Watch the trailer below:
