Jamal New Empire Song
Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray, left) and Jamal (Jussie Smollett, right) both have beefs with their father Lucious (Terrence Howard, not pictured) on “Empire” Season 2. Fox

Jamal (Jussie Smollett) is normally the calm and kind member of the Lyon family on Fox’s “Empire” Season 2. However, fans will see a different side of the singer in episode 12, titled “A Rose By Any Other Name.” Wednesday he’s going to takes shots at his father, Lucious (Terrence Howard), with a new song called “Like My Daddy.”

“Like My Daddy” was released exclusively by Entertainment Weekly on Monday and the song shows an edgier side to Jamal’s music. Jamal’s songs are often powerful and catchy pop songs, but the singer took a darker approach on his latest single. The song contains lyrics towards Lucious like “not allowed to shed a tear, growing up with all your phobic fears,” and “It’s hard to love the devil, he’s a hater.” You can hear the song here.

In episode 12, Jamal is expected to run into trouble with his fan base. The likely cause of this is what Lucious said to Jameson (William Fichtner) about him hooking up with Skye (Alicia Keys). Jameson planned on marketing Jamal as a gay artist, but cancelled his plans to do so after Lucious told him he had a girlfriend now. Jamal apparently has had enough of his father being homophobic.

Although “Like My Daddy” is an angrier song than what viewers are used to hearing from Jamal, it’s not the first time Jamal has used music to make a statement to his father. Lucious has always been ashamed of Jamal’s sexuality, so Jamal used his father’s song “You’re So Beautiful” to publicly come out in Season 1. You can watch the performance in the video below:

Lucious has made a habit of making his sons angry with him on “Empire.” Hakeem got so fed up with his father’s abuse this season that he decided to vote for his father being removed as the CEO of Empire. Hakeem now sits on the throne of Empire and he looks to bring the rest of his family in to work with him except for Lucious. Lucious is never one to take things lying down. You can expect some sort of pushback towards Hakeem and Jamal in Wednesday night’s episode.
