“Fear the Walking Dead” star Frank Dillane said that his character, Nick, actually felt relieved when his girlfriend Luciana (Danay Garcia) left Broke Jaw Ranch on her own in Season 3, episode 5.

“There’s a sense of relief because she obviously didn’t want to be there,” Dillane said in an interview with AMC. “Nick didn’t want to be put in that difficult position of having to choose between his mother [Madison (Kim Dickens)] and his girlfriend, so I think he feels a sudden weight off his shoulders. It’s one less thing to worry about.”

In an interview with BT TV, Garcia, along with executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and showrunner Dave Erickson explained why Luciana ultimately decided to leave the ranch. “Luciana knows that the ranch is like a ticking clock,” Garcia said. “Sooner or later it’s gonna explode. Everything is going to hell.”

Hurd added that Luciana is very much aware that Jeremiah (Dayton Callie) will always see her as an outsider, and that’s one of the reasons why she couldn’t stay there for good. “Otto believes that people with the same value system, the same skin color, the same background, that’s his tribe. Luciana has a different tribe. He would never really be able to see her as someone who belongs, and she knows that,” explained Hurd.

“Luciana doesn’t trust them [anyway],” Hurd continued. “And these are not the people that she wants to find a future with.”

As for Luciana’s decision to leave Nick behind, Erickson said: “She realizes that as much as [Nick] might care for [her], Nick has greater obligations to her mom and sister [Alicia (Alicia Debnam-Carey)], and she comes to that awareness on her own.”

Although Luciana hasn’t appeared on the show since she left the ranch, Nick told Madison in Season 3, episode 6 that Luciana went to Mexicali, where she knows some people. Will the second half of the season give viewers an update on Luciana? Or have viewers already seen the last of the former La Colonia scout?

“Fear the Walking Dead” midseason premiere (Season 3, episode 9) will air on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
