Two quarters of corporate earnings are behind us for 2012 and a couple of third-quarter earnings reports are starting to trickle in.

This year's second-quarter revenue growth was only 0.8 percent higher year over year and has been steadily shrinking since hitting its peak in the second quarter of 2011, according to Greg Harrison at Thomson Reuters Proprietary Research.

Analysts believe there are more disappointments in store. They expect companies in the S&P 500 to post negative revenue growth rate - a 0.1 percent decline -- in the third quarter. Meanwhile, profits are expected to decline by 2 percent for the period.

FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX), operator of the world's largest cargo airline, shocked Wall Street last Tuesday when it warned that quarterly earnings will fall short of its forecast after a weak global economy damped revenue from express shipments.

The Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx said profit for the quarter that ended Aug. 31 will range from $1.37 to $1.43 a share. That was less than the June 19 projection of $1.45 to $1.60 a share.
