“Stranger Things” Season 2 will be out later this month and fans can now play an RPG game based on the hit Netflix series while they wait. BonusXP, Inc. has released “Stranger Things: The Game” for iOS and Android devices for free.

“Stranger Things: The Game” features a retro style RPG gameplay that bears resemblance to the old school “Legend of Zelda” game for the SNES. It also comes with the classic 2D style graphics along with 8-bit music. The overall aesthetic is a perfect reflection of the series ’80s settings.

The game is set in the town of Hawkins in 1984 where the first season of the Netflix series took place. The game features familiar locations like Mirkwood Forest and the Hawkins Lab. Users will be able to play as different characters from the series and each of them will have their own special skills. Lucas for example will be equipped with his Wrist-Rocket slingshot, while Nancy will have different kinds of baseball bats at her disposal. There are a total of eight unlockable characters.

“Stranger Things: The Game” will not only challenge players to avoid enemies, but also solve some puzzles. Some of the puzzles in the game will require players to use the special abilities of their selected characters. All throughout the game, players will also have to collect Eggos and gnomes. If users collect enough of these items, they could unlock the complete VHS library in the game. Pocket Gamer reported earlier that completing the VHS library will unlock a new trailer for “Stranger Things” Season 2.

“Born after 1984? You might want to start with Normal difficulty, which lets you explore at your own pace. Death isn’t even that bad. However, if you’ve honed your skills on the unforgiving games of yesteryear, then Classic is the soul-crushing mode for you,” BonusXP said in a press release, according to Rolling Stone. “Completionist? Collect all the Eggos and Gnomes. Complete the full VHS library. Check off all the achievements. Who knows what secret characters or exclusive, never-before-seen-footage- of-Season-2 they might unlock…”

Controls for “Stranger Things: The Game” is very simple. The entire game can be controlled by tapping. Tapping an enemy will perform an attack, tapping on an empty tile will move the character and tapping on a chest will open it. Chests scattered throughout the game will have pieces of hearts (health points) and keys for opening locked doors.

“Stranger Things: The Game” will offer over 10 hours of gameplay, six dungeons and over 30 quests, according to Touch Arcade. There are also some levels where users will be taken to the Upside Down. “Stranger Things: The Game” also allows players to compete with friends with Speed Run times on leaderboards and social media.

Most importantly, “Stranger Things: The Game” is completely free to download and play on iOS and Android devices. It doesn’t even have in-app purchases. This seems like the perfect game to play while waiting for “Stranger Things” Season 2, which will be coming to Netflix on Oct. 27.
