A recall has been issued for fresh peaches, nectarines, and plums that were sold at a number of retailers including Walmart, Costco, and ALDI for potential listeria contamination. A total of 1,727 cartons of peaches have been recalled along with 1,207 cartons of nectarines and 365 cartons of plums.

The recalled fruit was distributed by Jac Vandenberg, Inc. throughout Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.

The full list of retailers that sold the contaminated fruit includes Walmart, Costco, ALDI, Fairway Market, Hannaford, and Market Basket. The fruit was sold as a bulk product with a PLU sticker that reads PLU #4044, 3035, and 4378, displaying the country of origin as Chile.

The peaches, nectarines, and plums sold at ALDI were in two-pound bags and sold under the Rio Duero brand with an EAN number of #7804650090281, 7804650090298, and 7804650090304. The nectarines sold at Costco were packaged in a four-pound plastic clamshell also under the Rio Duero brand with an EAN number of #7804650090212.

Consumers that purchased the recalled fruit can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria in the recalled fruit was discovered during a routine sampling of the peaches, nectarines, and plums. The cause of the contamination is still under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail adults, and elderly people as well as those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeria infection include high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.

Jac Vandenberg has not received any reports of illness to date from the affected fruit.
