  • Leak shows that the Pixel line up will launch with a Samsung Galaxy S21 similar GPU
  • Pixel 6 series may come with similar performance as the S21 as GPUs vary in forms
  • Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro may launch in a few months

If rumors are anything to go by, Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will debut with a bold design and could be powered by a chipset similar to Samsung Galaxy S21 GPU.

Google reportedly plans to release its upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with the same GPU found in Samsung Galaxy S21. A recent leak claimed that Google will launch the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with the Mali GPU. The Mali-G78 GPU is the same chipset used on Samsung Galaxy S21, XDA Developers reported.

Tipster @akes29 spotted a Google Issue Tracker comment that published a P21 device ANGLE logcat list. The list showed Mali-G78 GPU rendering the “P21” device presumed to be the Pixel 6.

The same chipset is found in the global version of the Samsung Galaxy S21. Galaxy S21 was powered by a Samsung Exynos chipset instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. The Google Issue Tracker note was deleted later.

Mali-G78 GPU supports 14-cores in Samsung Galaxy S21. It is also seen in Huawei Mate X2 where it supports up to 24-cores. However, it is not known if the Mali-G78 GPU on the Pixel 6 lineup will be similar to Mate X or Galaxy S21.

9to5 Mac said it is important to remember that the GPU can come in different forms. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro chipset could go with a different frequency and run faster or slower than the Samsung Galaxy S21’s GPU.

In 2020, Google Pixel 5 earned criticisms after falling below the public expectation. The majority of the complaints pointed out its poor GPU performance.

Reports claimed that the Pixel 5’s Adreno 620 GPU lagged behind the performance of other devices sold at the same price. Doing similar tasks, Google’s flagship phone worked slower than its competitors.

Meanwhile, a report from Android Open Source Project (AOSP) that corroborated various claims on Google’s ongoing Whitechapel systems on chips (SoC) project sparked hope that the giant learned its lesson from the Pixel 5 performance. Google will seemingly launch the Pixel 6 series with a stronger GPU. The company reportedly develops Whitechapel with Samsung.

Toms Guide suggests that Google may wait for a few more months before launching the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
