A man with two handguns attempted to enter the premises of a hospital’s psychiatric emergency room in Ohio and fired his weapon on a police officer, wounded a security officer and then fatally shot himself, according to police authorities Thursday.

According to a report by New York Post, Eliot Isaac, police chief of Cincinnati identified the gunman as Isaiah Currie, 20, a resident of Cincinnati.

The incident which took place at University of Cincinnati Medical Center was recorded on a surveillance camera and also in 911 recordings.

The report stated that an employee of the medical center said during a 911 call, “We have a shooter here… I’m hiding under a desk. Hurry!”

According to Isaac, the police authorities still haven't figured out Currie’s exact motive behind the incident. He also stated that that Currie had a criminal record which included charges related to drugs, assault on a corrections officer, resisting arrest, and assault on a University of Cincinnati Health security officer.

According to the report, Isaac provided an account of the whole incident. He stated that Currie after entering the hospital building was involved in a struggle with a security guard after which he fired the shots from his gun. The guard then ran out of the building and Currie also chased him.

Isaac then stated that the surveillance video footage showed Currie outside the hospital before locating the security officer and then running after him while firing more shots. The security officer got two gunshot wounds in the torso region.

Isaac continued by saying that Currie then came back inside the hospital. He apparently left his car keys and he came back to the emergency room lobby to get them. Currie was said to be walking steadily with two guns, one in each hand.

Isaac then stated that a Cincinnati pile officer who was on duty at a nearby hospital came into the emergency psychiatry services wing which resulted in Currie firing a shot at the police officer. However, Currie missed his target. The police officer, Bob Nelson, then joined with other officers who came to the crime scene and all of them moved towards Currie.

Currie then shot himself with a single gunshot.

Isaac stated that the action of Nelson “and the action of the other responding officers were nothing less than heroic, along with the actions of the security officer.”

Isaac also lauded the staff of the medical center who locked the emergency room prior to Currie returning. “He was not able to penetrate,” stated Isaac.

Isaac also stated that Currie carried 9mm and .22-caliber handguns and one of them was stolen.

However, this is not an isolated case of this nature. In November, a doctor was fatally shot by a gunman in the parking of Affinity Medical Center in Massillon, Ohio. The gunman, identified as Micheal Wood who fired at Dr. George Q. Seese also shot himself afterward.

According to the police authorities, as a part of an initial investigation, it was found that both the men “shared a mutual love interest.”
