  • Harvey Weinstein is set to lose his British royal honor following his conviction in the sexual assault case
  • Weinstein received the honor in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to the British film industry
  • He has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after more than 80 women accused him of sexual misconduct

Convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein is expected to be stripped of his royal honor in the U.K. later this week following his conviction in the sexual assault case.

The government will be looking to remove the CBE as the Honours Forfeiture Committee is set to meet on Sept. 18 to discuss the recipients who have brought shame to the system, Daily Mail reported. Weinstein was awarded the prestigious accolade in 2004 for outstanding contribution to the British film industry.

If the decision is made, the request will be sent to the Queen for her approval.

The move comes almost seven months after The Times Of London revealed that the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, is in favor of revoking Weinstein’s honor. The statement was made by Johnson’s official spokesperson in February.

“We are crystal clear that unwanted behavior is completely unacceptable. We condemn sexual violence in all its forms,” The Times of London quoted the spokesperson, as saying.

One of the members of the British Parliament, Chi Onwurah, also urged the government to remove the honor that has been given to Weinstein.

“In light of the guilty verdict will the Secretariat finally strip Mr. Weinstein of his CBE as I first requested on 11 October 2017? Or will they continue to honor Mr. Weinstein at the expense of all those who have experienced sexual violence and especially his victims?” Onwurah wrote in her letter.

Apart from Weinstein, many notable personalities have previously been stripped of their titles. The list includes Rolf Harris, former president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, Anthony Blunt, Edward John Roberts, and Paula Vasco-Knight.

The “Me Too” movement started when actresses came out and spoke about their horrifying ordeal. The New York Times published a story revealing the decades of allegations of sexual harassment against Weinstein. Actresses Rose McGowan and Ashley Judd were among the first women who came forward to share their experiences.

The movement picked up its momentum when more and more A-list actresses broke their silence and accused the producer of sexual misconduct. Cara Delevingne, Kate Beckinsale, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, Uma Thurman Gwyneth Paltrow, Lena Headey, and Lea Seydoux voiced their own stories in public.

Meanwhile, actresses like Jessica Mann, Miriam Haley, Annebella Sciorra, Dawn Dunning, Lauren Young, and Tarale Wulff took the producer to court and demanded justice. Weinstein, 67, was found guilty of third-degree rape against Mann and first-degree criminal sexual act against his former assistant Haley.

Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault.
