A day after the fatal mass shooting in San Diego Sunday, a Go Fund Me page was set up to raise money to cover the victims' medical expenses. The shooting at a gated pool area in the La Jolla Crossroads complex killed one woman and left six people injured.

The Go Fund Me page was set up by Demetrius Griffin, who witnessed the shooting. One victim was injured in the leg and another person sustained a broken bone while trying to escape the shooting.

“I was directly affected by this incident, due to the fact that I was there. The event is traumatizing, surreal and creates disbelief within our families and friends. … Proceeds will go to those that have been effected, and we would love all of your love at support, thank you!,” Griffin wrote on the donation page.

The injured victims are reported to be in stable condition and were being treated at a local hospital for gunshot wounds. Peter Selis, the 49-year-old assailant, was shot dead by San Diego Police Department on Sunday. Those who witnessed the incident, said Selis appeared to be calm when he opened fire.

“These victims were just in his vicinity when he committed this terrible tragedy,” police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said. “What started as a celebration of a friend’s birthday party turned into a tragedy of just epic proportion for all those in attendance.”

One of the victims was white and the rest were black and Latino. There was speculation of the shooting being a hate crime. Zimmerman however downplayed that theory.

“There is zero information to indicate that race played a factor in this terrible and horrific crime,” Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman countered Monday morning while relaying the timeline of the incident. “The victims were targeted for no other reason but their mere presence in the vicinity of the suspect.”

According to Zimmerman, Selis was dejected following a recent breakup with his girlfriend and that he called her during the shooting to make her listen.

“It was apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage,” she said.

According to San Diego Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fennessey, one of the security guards at the apartment complex where the shooting happened, helped rescue three victims with the help of a motorized cart to transfer them to ambulances and paramedics.

Thomas Blea, one of the victims who sustained a leg injury from the shooting, thanked the security guard for helping those injured.

"That guy saved us a lot of time, getting us to the fire department in a safe zone, and getting us over here," Blea said. "Everybody was great, it was a team effort all around, from the police department, one of the officers was with us the whole time, he was amazing, I don’t remember his name, but that guy was amazing."

In October 2015, Selis — who worked as a mechanic at a Ford dealership — reportedly filed for federal bankruptcy protection and listed $14,000 in assets and $108,000 in liabilities. According to San Diego court records, Selis divorced his wife Michelle in 2008 with whom he had two children.
