Henry Cavill's turn to wear Superman's cape "has passed."

Cavill, 39, released a statement on Instagram giving DC fans an update about his superhero character "Superman." Fans were expecting his return following his announcement in October that he would be back. But it's no longer happening.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran, and it's sad news, everyone," he began. "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn't the easiest, but that's life. The changing of the guard is something that happens."

He noted that he respects Gunn and Safran's decision because he understood that "they have a universe to build." He also wanted the "best of luck" and the "happiest of fortunes" for those still involved in the project.

"For those who have been by my side through the years.....we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember.... Superman is still around," Cavill continued. "Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It's been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

Cavill's statement received tons of replies from his fans and fellow celebrities. Many of them showed their support for him.

"You are and will always be our Superman, and you are, of course, so much more. Here's to the brilliance that lies before you," Dany Garcia commented.

"Hope to catch you in another universe, sir," "Shazam" star Zachary Levi wrote. "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa wrote, "Love [you], brother."

"I'm sorry to hear this but I'm excited to see whatever you do next. Lovely meeting you the other night," "Eternals" actor Kumail Nanjiani added.

In October, Cavill shared a video announcing his return as Superman.

"I wanted to make it official that I am back as Superman," he said in the clip. "The image you see on this post and what you saw in 'Black Adam' are just a very small taste of things to come."

"A very small taste of what's to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded," he wrote in the caption of the video.

Meanwhile, Gunn will pen a "Superman" movie focusing on the younger years of the superhero, so it will be played by a new actor. Gunn and DC Studios co-chair and co-CEO Safran shared the news with Cavill and discussed ideas for potentially collaborating with him in the future on a different role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
