German (Jonathan McDaniel) and Derek (McKinley Freeman) have had their issues on “Hit The Floor” in the past, mostly due to their affections for Ahsha (Taylour Paige), but Season 4 looks likely to be when the two truly come to terms with one another.

Tuesday night’s episode of the BET dance drama saw the return of German, who fans hadn’t seen since he was released from prison in Season 3, thanks to Raquel (Valery M. Ortiz) falsely confessing that she was the one who murdered Olivia (Charlotte Ross). When he got out, all he wanted to do was start over and figure out what was next for him.

Well, in Season 4, episode 2 of “Hit The Floor,” viewers found out that being the new Los Angeles head coach is next. In the Season 4 premiere, the team had lost their returning head coach Pete Davenport (Dean Cain) when he died in a drunken accident. Though this was hard for the characters on the show, and for fans watching at home, it made way for German to come back and take on that position.

“You wonder how German’s gonna find his way and then certain things happen in the universe that somewhat might kind of feel messed up, but it opens up doors for other people and it’s just one of those things where it was a great move for the storyline,” McDaniel told International Business Times about German taking over for Pete.

With German now coaching the Devils and Derek back on the team, the two had to begin to figure out their dynamic and how this coach-player relationship will work because of their past. Luckily, they had started this path towards respecting one another at the end of Season 3, where instead of fighting over Ahsha, they bonded over both trying to protect her. Now, in the latest episode, the two begin bonding over the fact that they’re both done with her.

“I would say that there is a shift and instead of a bromance, it’s more of a mutual respect,” McDaniel told IBT. “We’ve been through a lot together, individually and within this love triangle with Ahsha, and I think now, as men in the world that we’re living in on the show, you kind of understand that things happen, situations turn bad, but at the end of the day, business is business.”

He continued: “I think that two guys who really do have a mutual respect, like Derek and German, could actually come together and say, ‘You know what, man? You don’t have no problem. I don’t have no problem. Can we get down to having a good time?’”

The actor remembered all the craziness the two characters went through in the first three seasons, the “fights, arguments, crazy moments where they look at each other, ready to kill each other over, over this girl,” but said that they’re ready to move past all of that.

While “these guys can actually be under one roof together and they can actually work around each other” for now, McDaniel teased that “something else might happen” in the future because “there’s always ups and downs in friendships.”

Freeman echoed McDaniel’s thought, telling IBT that “there’s a lot” that happens with those two, and all the other characters on the show, throughout this season. He continued, “It literally is amazing how much we crammed into eight episodes.”

“Hit The Floor” Season 4 airs on BET on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT.
