Hyundai Motor Group announced on Monday that the company would provide 1,100 hydrogen fuel cell systems to German Faun Group's Enginius car brand in a three-year deal.

This three-year deal will see Hyundai's 90-kilowatt hydrogen fuel-cell systems powering two of the vehicles under the Enginius brand name set to debut in 2023 and 2025. The two vehicles are garbage trucks and cargo trucks.

"Partnering with Faun Group, HTWO took one step closer to reducing fossil fuel reliance," said Hyundai Motor Group's head of the hydrogen fuel cell division Lim Tae-won in a statement.

Hyundai has been developing its hydrogen fuel cell systems for years, although the South Korea-based company isn't the only one to have focused on this research. Toyota and Bosch have both moved toward using fuel cells for heavy-duty trucks and switching from using diesel engines for trucks to clean energy. The Indiana-based manufacturer of diesel engines, Cummins, has also moved toward developing fuel cells instead of diesel engines.

As Hyundai has already tested out a fuel cell heavy-duty truck fleet in Switzerland, the company made the move to make its fuel cell system available for smaller brands. The goal is to produce half a million hydrogen vehicles and 700,000 hydrogen fuel cell systems by 2030.
