In a case of murder-suicide in Indiana, a man fatally shot his mother before turning the gun on himself.

Officers with the Brownsburg Police Department arrived at a home in Columbia Circle on Saturday evening after receiving information that a person was shot inside the residence. The caller said that their friend, identified as 25-year-old Steven Serio, had told them he had shot his mother multiple times and killed her.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they "were able to hear what they believed to be one gunshot," BPD Captain Jennifer Pyatt-Barrett said in a statement Monday, Indy Star reported. They entered the home and found the man lying in a pool of blood in the living room.

"Officers then forced entry and discovered Steven in the living room and unresponsive with what was an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," Pyatt-Barrett said.

The officers rushed him to a local hospital but he was declared dead by the doctors.

The officers discovered the body of 59-year-old Alana Serio in another room. The woman had multiple gunshot wounds to her body.

As part of the investigation, the officers interviewed witnesses and family members who told them Steven "suffered from mental illness and substance abuse."

The motive behind the crime was not known.

The incident comes less than a month after a Connecticut lawyer fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Police arrived at their home and found the bodies of 59-year-old John Liquori and his wife, 55-year-old Cindy Liquori, in the bedroom. Police believe the man shot his wife while she was sleeping and then killed himself with the same gun. Investigation revealed the woman had tested positive for COVID-19 and her husband, who was a well-known divorce lawyer, may have had it too.

In another similar incident last month, a soldier killed his pregnant wife following an altercation at their home in North Carolina. The man ended his life after that. The couple's toddler daughter was present in the room when the incident unfolded.
