A mother in Texas fatally shot her 10-year-old son and injured her 16-year-old daughter before turning the gun on herself.

Officers arrived at New Braunfels after being informed about a shooting incident Thursday, and found three people with gunshot wounds in a house. The 43-year-old woman, Chelsee Dodd, and her 10-year-old son, Trace Dodd, were declared dead at the scene, News4SA reported.

The deputies also found the woman's 16-year-old daughter at the scene suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The teenager was conscious and breathing, and was rushed to the University Hospital for treatment.

“Preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the two juveniles (who are brother and sister) are victims in this case and the adult female (who is their mother) is the suspect,” police said, according to KXAN media. They added Chelsee and Trace's bodies have been sent for autopsy.

The New Braunfels Police Department Criminal Investigations Division said the incident was a case of murder-suicide.

Police launched an investigation Thursday and briefly closed the Oak Run Middle School, Veramendi Elementary School and the New Braunfels Christian Academy, which were located nearby. The two children studied at Veramendi Elementary and New Braunfels High School.

"We are grieving with all those affected and offer our support as needed. The loss of any life, especially of one of our own students, is hard to grasp," the New Braunfels Independent School District said in an official letter to the parents, adding that a crisis counseling team will be available in both schools for all students.

Last month in Virginia, a woman shot and killed her three young children before killing herself. Officers responding to the scene found the bodies of the victims. The woman was said to be 27 years old, while two children were aged three and 10. A third child was found injured and was rushed to a hospital. The child later succumbed to the injuries. An 8-year-old child was also allegedly at the scene, but managed to escape the attack.
