  • James Hewitt was a staff captain in the Life Guards, a regiment of the Household Cavalry
  • His five-year affair with the late Princess Diana started after he began giving her riding lessons
  • He now works as a gardener at the Devon, England estate where he lives with his mother, a report says

James Hewitt’s name was a favorite among British and international tabloids after it was revealed that he and the late Princess Diana had an affair for years while she was married to Prince Charles.

Hewitt’s net worth is currently estimated to be $3 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth, which put Princess Diana's fortune prior to her death in 1997 at $25 million.

The former British Army officer, now 62, has been staying with his elderly mother in Devon, England, and now works as a gardener for the grounds of the estate they are living in, earning $5,500 annually, Daily Mail reported. As a gardener, Hewitt oversees six acres of land, which also includes two ponds. His responsibilities include the upkeep of the estate’s front and immediate backyard.

Hewitt previously collaborated with writer Anna Pasternak for the 1994 book “Princess in Love,” which revealed intimate details of his affair with Diana based on letters they wrote to each other. The book sold about 500,000 copies, The Oprah Magazine reported.

After retiring from the military, Hewitt opened a golf driving range in the mid-'90s and made several appearances on reality TV, including a stint on “X-Factor” and the “Big Brother”-esque competition “Back to Reality.” Hewitt later opened the Polo House bar in Marbella, Spain, in 2009, but it closed down in 2013.

Hewitt’s life was more fascinating and thrilling when he was younger. He served as a cavalry officer in the British Army before meeting the mother of the next British king. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was then commissioned into the British Army's Life Guards in 1978 as a second lieutenant.

It was his military connection that brought him to the late princess. He revealed in his book, “Love and War,” that he was working as a staff captain in the Life Guards when Princess Diana asked him to give her horse riding lessons.

“It’s a gradual period and then, you know, suddenly you can’t get enough of each other or see each other as much as you want,” Hewitt described the relationship between him and Diana during a 2017 interview with Australia’s “Sunday Night.”

It was in 1991 when the affair came to light due to Hewitt’s ex-wife, who said her husband's five-year extramarital relationship caused their split, per Oprah Magazine. Princess Diana later admitted the affair with Hewitt in her infamous 1995 Panorama interview.

Princess Diana's royal protection officer, Ken Wharfe, wrote in his book "Diana: Closely Guarded Secret" that she ended her and Hewitt's relationship after the latter's assignment led him abroad by the end of the 1980s and he "refused to give up his career" for her.

Aside from his affair with the Princess of Wales, Hewitt also often comes up in rumors claiming he may be the real father of Prince Harry. However, the Duke of Sussex had been 2 years old when Diana and Hewitt met in 1986.
