Actor Jamie Dornan is most recognized for his role as Christian Grey is the book-turned-movie, “Fifty Shades Darker,” but the star doesn’t exactly like the character or his sexual preferences.

To prepare for the role, he visited an S&M dungeon. “It was like nothing I'd experienced before,” Dornan told GQ Australia Monday. “I'd never seen any form of S&M before this, I had no interest in that world.”

In E.L. James’ best-selling trilogy, Christian participates in a BDSM lifestyle. BDSM—which stands for Bondage, Domination, Sadism and Masochism—is a sexual activity that consists of restraints, the infliction of pain and relinquishment of control.

While Dornan doesn’t criticize anyone who participates in BDSM, it’s not something that excites him. “I've always been open-minded and liberal—I'd never judge anyone's sexual preference. Whatever gets people off is entirely up to them and there's a million different ways to please yourself, sexually,” he told GQ Australia.

But that doesn’t mean he would be friends with his character. “[Christian Grey's] not the sort of bloke I'd get along with,” Dornan said. “All my mates are easy going and quick to laugh—I wouldn't imagine myself sat in a pub with him. I don't think he would be my type, when it comes to choosing mates.”

On the flip side, co-star Dakota Johnson, who plays love interest Anastasia Steele, likes BDSM. “First of all, there are some very chic avenues in BDSM,” Johnson told Vogue magazine’s February 2017 issue Friday. “It can be very beautiful and tasteful, and the materials can be luxurious.” Johnson admires the “bravery and honesty” of those who are into BDSM and added, “America is still so sexually oppressed.”

“Fifty Shades Darker,” the sequel to “Fifty Shades of Grey,” debuts in theaters nationwide Friday, Feb. 10.
