  • A 63-year-old man in New York City allegedly critically injured his wife, claiming she was cheating on him
  • He was charged with second-degree attempted murder and assault
  • The wife remained in critical condition Tuesday after suffering severe head trauma and going into cardiac arrest

A 63-year-old man in New York City has been accused of nearly beating his wife to death with a crowbar at a bus stop Monday because she was allegedly cheating on him, authorities said.

Julio Aponte used the weapon to repeatedly bash his unnamed 49-year-old wife in the head at approximately 7 a.m. at a bus stop in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, the New York Daily News reported, citing police.

The woman used the bus stop daily to get to work, a report by The New York Post said.

According to police, Aponte was shouting phrases like, "How dare you cheat on me?" during the assault. He then allegedly fled the scene on a motorcycle and left his wife behind while witnesses called 911.

Aponte left the motorcycle at West 163rd Street and Fort Washington Avenue and told a parking attendant that he had killed his wife, unnamed sources told the New York Post. After the parking attendant told Aponte to contact authorities, Aponte called 911 and claimed he murdered his wife because she had been cheating on him, the sources added.

Police arrested Aponte without incident minutes later inside a West Harlem parking garage.

Authorities recovered the crowbar used in the attack, which was wrapped in plastic, along with Aponte's backpack, police said.

The victim was taken to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where she remained in critical condition Tuesday, police said. She had suffered severe head trauma that caused her to go into cardiac arrest.

Aponte was charged with second-degree attempted murder and assault. He was awaiting arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court Tuesday.

A similar incident in northwest England resulted in a 60-year-old man receiving a life sentence two months ago after he admitted to stabbing his wife 300 times, killing her and causing her body to be so disfigured that it could not be identified.

George Leather used four different knives to fatally stab his 56-year-old wife, Paula Leather, in their home in Prescot, Merseyside, last year because she was allegedly "unfaithful" and had been engaging in affairs — claims that prosecutors said lacked any evidence to prove.

Paula's body was discovered on Nov. 15, 2020, with her face so badly disfigured that formal identification was done through a tattoo and a watch she was wearing.

Leather initially denied the murder and was set to stand trial, but he later pleaded guilty to the crime in April and was jailed for life.
