The 51-year-old actor could be seen wearing a breathing tube and hospital gown in the selfie taken from the intensive care unit.

"Thank you all for your kind words. Im (sic) too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all," he wrote Tuesday.

Renner's spokesperson said the actor was recovering Tuesday after undergoing surgery for the extensive injuries he suffered after the heavy machinery rolled over him near his Nevada property Sunday morning.

Renner suffered "blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries," his spokesperson said.

"Jeremy is making positive progress and is awake, talking and in good spirits," Samantha Mast, Renner's publicist, said in a statement obtained by CNN Tuesday. "He remains in ICU in critical but stable condition. He is overwhelmed by the showing of love and support. The family asks for your continued thoughts while he heals with his close loved ones."

Renner was moving snow from a private driveway that day so that his family members could depart his residence after they celebrated the holidays together, his representative added. Members of Renner's family were with him when the accident occurred.

An unnamed source told CNN's entertainment reporter Chloe Melas that the "Avengers: Endgame" star was "lucky to even be alive" after sustaining extensive injuries from the accident.
