Jimmy Kimmel was back to host the Oscars Sunday night, despite a major mix-up during the 2017 show. When it came time to announce the winner of best picture during film’s biggest night, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the award to “La La Land.” The real winner? “Moonlight.”

Millions watched as the wrong movie was called and then as the correction had to be made. A year later and people are still wondering how such an error could’ve been made. Returning host Kimmel made sure to address the matter during his opening monologue during this year’s ceremony.

“This year when you hear your name called, don’t get up right away,” he said. “Just give us a minute. We don’t want another ‘thing.’”

He continued: “Last year, about a week before the show the producers asked me if I wanted to do some comedy with the accountants and I said ‘No, I don’t want to do comedy with the accountants.’ So then the accountants went ahead and did comedy on their own.”

What actually happened during the 2017 snafu was the best picture presenters were given the incorrect envelope, receiving the one for best actress in a leading role, which went to Emma Stone for “La La Land,” instead of the best picture one.

This led to the film’s cast and crew heading up onto the stage before an Oscars crew member walked onstage to tell them that there was an error.

The “La La Land” producer, Jordan Horowitz, quickly told the crowd, “There’s been a mistake, ‘Moonlight,’ you won best picture, this is not a joke.”

And so an Oscars moment that will be remembered forever was made.

The 2018 Oscars airs Sunday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Learn how to live stream the show HERE.
