Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle wouldn’t have been able to marry Prince William and Prince Harry if not for Queen Mother.

In the Netflix documentary “The Royals,” it was revealed that the Queen Mother paved the way for women to wed their royal husbands despite their lack of official titles.

“In the 1920s, princes were allowed to marry commoners, but actually, they were still expected to marry princes from other royal families. Nevertheless, this didn’t stop Bertie, future King George VI, from taking Elizabeth to be his bride,” the documentary said.

At that time, this move was considered a step towards political modernization.

Robert Lacey, a royal historian, also credited Queen Mother as the reason why the British monarchy is still alive today.

“Many people were quite shocked when first Albert and then his brothers married wives who were not royals. In Germany in particular where there are very careful distinctions between royal and different levels of the aristocracy, people sniffed and said: ‘Look, the British monarchy’s become middle class,’” he said.

But at the end of the day, the British monarchy survived in the 20th century for that very reason. The German monarchy, on the other hand, did not.

In October, the Queen Mother also made headlines after it was revealed how she informed Prince Charles that King George VI has died. Kenneth Rose, a royal biographer, revealed that Prince Charles was just 4 at that time.

“Pope-Hennessy tells me a story which came to him from the Queen Mother. When the King died in his sleep in 1952, she broke the news to little Prince Charles,” Rose wrote in a column for Daily Mail.

The Queen Mother explained to Prince Charles that when the valet had taken in the King’s tea that morning, he had found the King George VI dead. The young Prince Charles listened intently and innocently wondered who drank the tea.

Meanwhile, Rose also revealed that when she was still alive, Queen Mother hated hearing the national anthem on television. While at the Kempton Park Races, she urged the staff to turn it off. He said that the moment was so embarrassing because it was like hearing the Lord's Prayer when praying canasta.
