Kate Middleton and Prince Harry are both talented photographers.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex posted photos on their separate social media accounts on Tuesday. Middleton shared snaps of Prince Louis to celebrate his birthday. Meanwhile, Prince Harry posted eight nature photographs to commemorate Earth Day.

The netizens were blown away with Prince Harry’s shots since they appeared to be taken by a professional photographer. A number described the snaps as “lovely” and “magnificent.” The Sussex’s followers all agreed that the photos are great.

Jonathan Jones of The Guardian finds Prince Harry’s nature photographs, especially the monochrome portrait of a rhino resting its head on a fallen tree, “eloquent” for an ecological image. However, he felt that the duke’s “aesthetic ambitions are too obvious.”

He felt that Prince Harry was emulating the great artist Sebastião Salgado with the black and white effect. For him, the royal didn’t spend his life seeking images but only comes upon them as part of his royal lifestyle. Prince Harry’s pictures was an “ethical version of a privileged traveller’s ‘amazing’ snaps.”

Meanwhile, according to him, Middleton’s shots feature artistic echoes just like Prince Harry’s but are more subtle. The photos taken by the duchess has an intense focus on Prince Louis and “does not only exhibits technical excellence but communicates feeling.”

Jones concluded that Prince Harry is “play-acting” at being a great photographer while Middleton takes family snapshots to show that they can be little works of art.

London-based award-winning photographer Bronwen Sharpe also commented on Middleton’s photography skills where she makes her children her favorite subject. According to her, no other photographer would be able to capture the same connection she has with her children because the duchess’ photos feature “real warmth and love.”

She also complimented Middleton’s “natural ability to capture humanity.” Sharpe added that the Duchess of Cambridge as a great eye for composition and color.

Between the two, Middleton has a wider experience in her subjects. Back in February 2018, she wrote a foreword for an exhibition catalogue to stress the importance of appreciating childhood.

In her statement, she admitted that the history of photography has long interested her, so she chose it as the subject of her undergraduate thesis. She added that photographs of children, in particular, are “real interest to me.”
