Keanu Reeves has opened up about his return to the “Matrix” franchise, saying the “wonderful story” written by filmmaker Lana Wachowski encouraged him to come back for the fourth installment of the highly successful film series.

In an interview with Empire, the 55-year-old actor admitted that he was pretty excited to be part of a project that has been written so wonderfully. The “John Wick” star will be reprising the role of Neo in the upcoming movie and will team up with the Wachowskis (Lana and Lilly Wachowski) for the first time in more than 18 years.

He also explained that it is an honor for him to work with the Wachowskis again, and he noted that the story has some really “meaningful” things to say.

“Lana Wachowski wrote a beautiful script and a wonderful story that resonated with me. That is the only reason to do it. To work with her again is just amazing. It has been really special, and the story has, I think some meaningful things to say, and that we can take some nourishment from,” Reeves said.

On the other hand, Carrie-Anne Moss, who is also returning to the franchise to portray the character of Trinity, confessed that she “never” thought a fourth movie in the “Matrix” universe would ever be made. However, she later admitted that she was pretty “excited” when the script was brought to her.

“I never thought that it would happen. It was never on my radar at all. When it was brought to me in the way it was brought to me, with incredible depth and all of the integrity and artistry that you could imagine, I was like, 'This is a gift.' It was just very exciting,” Moss said.

The first film of the series came out in 1999 and garnered universal acclaim. The movie was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and went on to win trophies in all the respective categories, including Film Editing.

The first film and its two sequels – “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions” – accumulated a staggering $1.6 billion at the global box office.

As of late, no release date has been given for the fourth installment in the series.
