The heavy rainstorm that occurred in Kentucky on Wednesday (April 29) overturned a horse-drawn buggy carrying an Amish Family, killing four out of the five children who were swept away by the floodwaters. The fifth child is reported to be missing.

The horrifying incident occurred in Salt Lick, a community in Bath County when the horse-driven cart, that was carrying an adult and five children, was trying to cross a low-water bridge on Adams Road got overturned by the storm and fell into the flooded stream.

According to Kentucky State Trooper Scott Ferrell, the adult was quickly rescued and a search was underway for the children.

After a rigorous hunt, the search party found four out of the five children who were dead. The officials are continuing to search for the fifth child, Ferrell said.

"Tragically, we have also had five Amish children swept away by floodwaters this evening after the heavy rain we’ve experienced today," Bath County Judge-Executive Bobby C. Rogers wrote on a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The Kentucky Police Department is using all the help they could get and had called in for a helicopter which is at the scene helping to speed up the search. According to Rogers’s statement, the National guards were bringing in 50 people to assist the search.

Rogers in his statement took a moment to thank all those who are a part of this search and rescue operation.

“I’m very appreciative of all those who have responded to this search and rescue effort; Jason York as Bath County EMD, Bath County Sheriff, Kentucky State Police, Volunteer Fire Department; as well as surrounding search and rescues; County Judge-Executives calling and offering support and resources for this search and rescue effort,” Rogers’s statement read.

He also requested citizens to avoid the area of Peasticks where this accident occurred. However, "I ask that you please remember these individuals, and their families in your prayers this evening, and the days ahead," Rogers wrote.

The victims’ family has been notified. The adult has been accounted for the incident. The relationship between the adult and the children is unknown.

No further information is available at the moment.
