Landry faces the consequence of betraying King Philip in the Season 1 finale of “Knightfall.”

According to the synopsis for Season 1, episode 10 of the History series, Landry (Tom Cullen) and the Templars fight for their lives in a battle against the Red Knights.

As revealed last episode, the Red Knights, aka the Blood Knights, is the mercenary army that De Nogaret (Julian Ovenden) assembled at the request of King Philip (Ed Stoppard) after the former told the latter that his wife Queen Joan (Olivia Ross) was sleeping with Landry. At the beginning of last episode, De Nogaret told King Philip that the Red Knights could take on the Templars as they are “as battle-hardened and as brutal.” But De Nogaret noted that the Red Knights have one advantage over the Templars and that is “they fight dirty.”

Fortunately, Landry knows what’s coming for them. In a sneak peek from the episode, Landry tells his fellow Templars about the Red Knights. “The King of France has sent mercenaries to kill us,” Landry tells his brothers, who surprisingly laugh off the threat. “We are to be finished quietly far from Paris out of sight. But we will not go quietly. Let this men be in no doubt that they have chosen a major opponent.”

In the trailer for the episode, Landry, Tancrede (Simon Merrells) and the rest of Templars come face to face with the Red Knights in the woods. Outnumbered by the enemies, the Templars appear to have been defeated with Landry being captured and brought to King Philip. Queen Joan, who happens to be in the battlefield, begs King Philip to stop punishing Landry, but Princess Isabella’s (Sabrina Bartlett) father doesn’t listen.

“You betrayed the King of France. This is what happens,” King Philip says before punching Landry in the face.

Also worth noting in the trailer is Gawain’s (Pádraic Delaney) presence on the side of the Red Knights. While it’s unclear why Gawain chooses to go against his Templar brothers one again, Delaney wishes that viewers would understand why his character does what he does.

“Gawain in episode 10 is very far removed from the guy we meet in episode 1,” Delaney told Cartermatt when asked what fans can expect from his character in the season ender. “When we were filming we weren’t privy to what would happen with our characters in the long term, but when I got the script for the finale, what Gawain becomes made sense to me. Even though the audience will probably think Gawain is foolish in his actions, they’ll understand why he does it because they will (I hope) identify with him in some way.”

“The finale keeps up the tone of the previous 9 episodes, it’s exciting and shocking,” Delaney teased of this week’s episode. “But the best part is how all of the storylines which have been building up come together and explode.”

“Knightfall” Season 1 finale, titled “Do You See the Blue?,” airs on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 10 p.m. EST on History.
