Netflix is said to have acquired the rights to the “Knives Out” sequels following the massive success of the 2019 murder mystery movie.

The streaming service has shelled out millions to buy the rights to “Knives Out 2” and “Knives Out 3,” Variety reports. The first film was a box office hit and earned an estimated $311.4 million against its $40 million budget.

The first movie followed a detective investigating the death of a wealthy writer and his greedy family, who become suspects. The film starred Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ana de Armas, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, and Christopher Plummer.

Cast And Crew Returns

Craig will reprise his role as detective Benoit Blanc for the sequels. Director Rian Johnson, who directed the first film, will also return to lead the two follow-ups. Deadline reports Johnson has also penned the two sequels.

Production

Casting for “Knives Out 2” is expected to begin immediately. Meanwhile, the movie will begin filming on June 28 in Greece.

Major Movie Deal

Netflix is reported to have bought the rights to “Knives Out 2” and “Knives Out 3” for $450 million, making it one of the largest purchases for rights to a movie series.

Bidding War

Before Netflix acquired the “Knives Out” sequels, the company was in a bidding war with fellow streaming services Apple and Amazon, says Deadline.

Release

Although the first “Knives Out” film was released in theaters, it is unclear whether the sequels will appear in cinemas or will be exclusive to the Netflix streaming service. Release dates are also unknown at this time.
