  • Leah Remini considers Thandie Newton brave for sharing her "nightmare" filming experience with Tom Cruise

  • Remini claimed Cruise is considered a “messiah” in the Church of Scientology

Leah Remini has chosen to stand next to Thandie Newton and has praised her for bravely sharing her horrible filming experience with Tom Cruise.

Newton had said that she had a "nightmare" experience with Cruise when they filmed "Mission Impossible 2" in 2000. Remini, who believes that Cruise is not a good person, commended her for speaking up.

"That takes huge balls to do what she did, and if more people speak out in that way, and be brave enough to do so, I think we might get somewhere," the 50-year-old actress told The Daily Beast.

"Tom has gotten away with being this ‘nice guy,’ because that’s what Scientology policy says—to create good PR in the world and make those ‘good actions’ known. But if you actually look at his actions, they’re not consistent."

Remini was a former member of the Church of Scientology. According to her, the religious group put importance on the "Top Gun" star who couldn't even keep his own marriage. Cruise married three times and all ended in divorce.

"When I was in Scientology I got in trouble in Scientology for saying, ‘Why is this guy the poster child for Scientology? He can’t keep a [explicit] marriage together, he’s jumping on couches, he’s acting like he knows anything about postpartum,’" Remini said.

"I learned pretty quickly that that’s not something you should be doing, because Tom Cruise is considered a ‘messiah’ in Scientology. This is a man who has not even seen his own daughter in years. That this guy can be running around and having people think he’s this super-nice guy, I don’t get it. But that’s the Hollywood-bulls--t game people play.”

In a recent interview with Vulture, Newton recalled filming a difficult scene with Cruise. The latter got frustrated with her performance and suggested that they should switch roles.

"So we filmed the entire scene with me being him — because, believe me, I knew the lines by then — and him playing me," Newton said.

"And it was the most unhelpful . . . I can’t think of anything less revealing. It just pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity,” she added.

Newton added that Cruise wasn't horrible, but she "was really stressed" at the time. She also shared that the actor’s ex-wife, Nicole Kidman, helped her get the role.

"You know what I mean? It’s kind of nice if you can pick together. Nicole was a huge advocate for me," Newton said.
