“Legacies” loves a good “Vampire Diaries” easter egg, but the latest was much more than that. In “Legacies” Season 2, episode 4, audiences see Kai Parker for the first time on the CW spinoff.

Kai (Christopher Wood) is seen on tape. MG (Quincy Fouse) gets his hands on a camcorder because he wants to record Lizzie’s (Jenny Boyd) date (why he doesn’t want to use his phone is unclear). He plays the tape that comes with the camera and sees Kai, but MG doesn’t see any significance. He just knows that the tape has been used and is told to record over it.

The tape shows Kai in a suit and he speaks directly to the viewer. “All this time travel’s been hard on the camera, Bon,” he says before celebrating that the video camera works. It’s not new footage. It’s from “The Vampire Diaries” Season 6, episode 22 when Kai explains to Bonnie (Kat Graham) that he linked her and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) lives.

“Vampire Diaries” fans will remember that Kai is the twins’ uncle. He’s been referenced here and there, but it’s clear that Alaric (Matt Davis) and Caroline (Candice King) haven’t told Lizzie and Josie everything about their uncle, who killed their birth mother as well as the rest of their extended family. The girls don’t remember because they were only five years old, but they helped banish Kai. He made a deal to return from Hell, but Bonnie and the twins put him in a prison world frozen in 2018.

It’ll become a lot more than easter eggs and references next year. Christopher Wood will reprise his role as Kai in “Legacies” Season 2, episode 12, Entertainment Weekly reports. The episode is expected to air on The CW in February.

Ahead of Kai’s return, there will be an “Originals” cast member on “Legacies.” Someone will visit Freya (Riley Voelkel) in episode 6 to learn more about Hope (Danielle Rose Russell).

“Legacies” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
