“Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart is promoting her new romantic drama, Amazon’s “Chemical Hearts,” but she isn’t speaking about her real-life relationship. The actress took to Twitter after an interview that seemed to be about ending her romance with “Riverdale” co-star Cole Sprouse went viral.

On Tuesday, just hours after the feature was published, Reinhart said she was speaking about her struggles with mental illness, and her quotes were taken out of context.

In the Refinery29 piece, Reinhart makes it clear that the summer has been rough. “The last couple of months have probably [been] the most emotional few months of my entire life and my therapist [told] me, ‘Your body's going through withdrawal from love. You're used to having this exchange of happy chemicals between you and the person that you're with,’” she explained.

The actress went on to call it a “fix,” implying love can be a drug. “In moments of my life, I have dropped every ounce of pride that I had just to be like, 'Love me. Please take the pain away for a day, a second, an hour, just so I can feel that fix again,'” she recalled.

The 23-year-old writes about breakups in her new poetry book, “Swimming Lessons,” out Sept. 29, but she doesn’t want her fans to assume every reference to failed romance is about the Jughead actor.

“I felt the need to write that because I was scared — and I am scared — that people are going to try and create their own idea of what my love life looked or looks like,” she says. “I'm not saying, ‘My boyfriend [expletive] another woman.’ I'm saying, ‘I felt betrayed.’”

Sprouse and Reinhart never explicitly stated when they got together or broke up, but there is an assumption that they’ve been in an on-again, off-again relationship for a few years. The two play love interests Betty and Jughead on The CW’s “Riverdale,” which is heading into its fifth season.
