Lizzo has looked back on her formative years and revealed she never thought she'd be desirable because almost everyone she saw on stage was thinner and light-skinned.

"I know people want to look like me now. But I'm talking about what it was like in my formative years. I wasn't really set up to believe that I was desirable," Lizzo told Elle in an interview that came out Wednesday.

"Nearly every star I saw onstage was thinner and light-skinned. And they didn't look like me," she said. "Sure, there were women like Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah. But they were the exception to the rule."

It was reportedly because of this that Lizzo used to have this feeling that even though her songs were good enough, people would still not enjoy them simply because they were from her. She also revealed that she thought of adding more people on stage so the audience would not focus on her all the time.

The 34-year-old singer, who was part of bands like Chalice and Grrrl Prty, revealed in the same interview that Destiny's Child ignited her passion to become an artist because the trio made the music industry seem more "accessible" to someone like her.

Lizzo then gushed over Beyoncé as she talked about the former Destiny's Child member's upcoming album and how she felt "numb" when it was announced.

"That excitement never goes away. She [Beyoncé] doesn't just put out music for the sake of putting out music – there's going to be something real," she explained. "A teachable moment. Every time I hear her, it's like, 'Man, I want to make people feel this way. How can I make people feel this way, too?'"

Lizzo's newest album, titled "Special," is dropping this month. It is said to be a culmination of her "hard-won personal growth," according to the outlet.

And speaking of growth, the singer said she's currently in a "very peaceful place." "I feel like all my projects before this were not in pursuit of fame, but in pursuit of telling my story, and finding my voice and then, eventually, helping people," she explained.

Lizzo will appear as Magic Mushroom in the short film "Yeti! Yeti!" The project is now under post-production.
