Drug overdose is one of the leading causes of accidental death in the U.S. While overdoses aren’t intentional in most cases, it can be life-threatening without timely intervention. But, for these women who accidentally consumed massive hits of LSD, the results were unexpected, in a good way.

Lysergic acid diethylamide, a.k.a. LSD, is one of the most potent hallucinogens and a well-known psychedelics consumed by individuals taking recreational drugs. Here are 3 instances when LSD overdose happened to be beneficial:

Case 1: A 46-year-old woman who snorted 55 mg of pure LSD

Not only did she survive after taking a staggering 550 times the normal limit of LSD (0.1 mg or 100 micrograms) but realized that her chronic foot pain since her 20s had reduced dramatically. She had been suffering from Lyme disease ever since her early 20s and had been going through bouts of pain in her damaged feet and ankles. She had taken LSD believing it was cocaine which was actually pure LSD in powder form. She had blacked out and had been vomiting frequently for the next 12 years. But her symptoms changed in the 12 hours following that and she started feeling ‘pleasantly high’. Ten hours later, she regained self-coherence. And her foot pain was gone the next day. Even though her pain returned later, she had been able to manage it with lower doses of morphine and a microdose of LSD every 3 days. And a couple of years later, she has stopped using both LSD and morphine and lives her life pain-free and without any withdrawal symptoms.

Case 2: a 15-year-old girl who overdoes 10 times the limited dose of LSD

She was suffering from bipolar disorder, depression, and hallucinations from the age of 12. Her supplier had mistakenly prepared a wrong dilution of LSD- 1000 mcg per glass instead of 100 mcg. She was found to exhibit erratic behavior for the next 6.5 hours followed by a seizure and found her lying in a fetal position. But miraculously, she turned alert and oriented by the time the ambulance had arrived. She was found to be free from all her mental illness symptoms.

Case 3: 26-year-old who drank half a glass of LSD-dosed water before she was aware of her pregnancy

She had consumed almost half a glass of LSD-mixed water at the same party and subsequently found out about her pregnancy. LSD overdose, however, did not cause any negative consequences. Not only did she have no problems during the course of her pregnancy, but there was also no developmental impairments on her son.
