2019 could be a not-so-kind year to Apple’s software if the trend these past few days continues. When Apple released the iOS 13, it was a monumental feat for the Cupertino-based tech giant’s mobile platform. However, in just a matter of one week, it had three emergency updates to fix crucial security bugs.

Just like the iOS 13, macOS Catalina is a massive release from Apple, but its release date was previously delayed to a later date. Finally, Apple seeded the latest macOS Catalina, and unlike iOS 13, it is not as bug-laden. However, macOS Catalina has its own share of issues leaving some developers and users out in the cold.

macOS Catalina introduced a lot of new things to the primary computing platform of Apple, but it also put to an end at least a couple of things. After several years of taking credit from the brand, the Cupertino-based tech titan finally let go of iTunes and has divided it into several apps. What initially appeared to be just a branding strategy later affected a niche of developers and users who are very passionate about music—DJs and musicians.

iTunes is a lot of things to various types of people, which is one portion of the problem that Apple solved when it decided to send it to retirement. However, for users and developers of DJ apps like Traktor and Rekordbox, it also offered an XML file that allowed them to organize music in the user’s iTunes library. When Apple decided to shutdown iTunes, the XML library obviously went away with it.

Aside from the iTunes issue, macOS Catalina also has some issues with its forward-looking features. Catalyst was designed to provide developers a way to bring iOS apps to macOS. However, right now; it is turning to be much of a trouble than it is worth for developers. Several developers have recently reported experiencing great difficulty in porting iPad apps to Mac using Catalyst.

There are also reports of performance issues on older Macs, which reportedly could not keep up with the newer Apple frameworks. Some users complained about having to purchase the app twice for an iPad app in case they want to use it on the Mac. Just like its brother iOS 13, macOS Catalina serves as the foundation for upcoming features and enhancements. But, it is also leaving some important things behind.
