Ukrainian-born choreographer Maksim Chmerkovskiy has safely returned to the U.S. just a day after telling his social media followers that he was forced to flee to Poland amid the Russian invasion. He had to take a 23-hour train ride from Kyiv to reach the neighboring country.

The 42-year-old ballroom dancing champion's wife, Peta Murgatroyd, received him when he landed at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Wednesday. The couple shared a long embrace before walking out of the airport together, according to ET.

"I just don't want to resent peace somewhere else because of what I just saw, that's the reality. I don't know really what to say right this second," Chmerkovskiy told ET's Kevin Frazier at the airport.

ET shared a clip of the emotional reunion of Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd at LAX and wrote, "It was an emotional reunion for Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd as he arrived home safely from Ukraine."

Chmerkovskiy grew up in Ukraine when the nation was part of the Soviet Union. He and his family immigrated to the U.S. in 1994. He recently went back to Ukraine to serve as a judge in the reality show "World Of Dance UA." He documented his experiences when the Russian soldiers began attacking Ukraine, forcing many residents to go to bomb shelters or to seek refuge in neighboring countries.

Prior to his return to the U.S., the "Dancing With The Stars" alum told his 1.1 million Instagram followers about the "non-stop shelling in Ukraine" and how he was worried about civilians dying in the attacks.

"The thing that worries me the most is this: We all saw this horrific-looking 40-mile convoy of weapons that are coming…the problem is that the locals – the ones that are pushing back. Yes, Ukraine is getting a lot of technology, Ukraine knows how to use it. Ukraine is very trained at it but the locals are using Molotov cocktails and are pushing the enemy and keeping them where [it is.]. They can't recognize some of the machinery because they have never seen it before so now that's the issue that is starting to arise," he said in a clip as he started walking to the boarding gate at an airport in Poland.

The celebrity choreographer also took a jab at Russian President Vladimir Putin and said, "He didn't just lie to us and the entire world. He lied to his people for a very long time. Now, they are confused and they are starting to be not sure…there's also a resilient bunch. He doesn't represent all the Russians."

Chmerkovskiy also uploaded images of the ongoing attacks in his Instagram Stories and included photos of captured young Russian soldiers and the destruction of a building in the city of Kharkov, which he claimed was done by Russia to break the morale of Ukrainians.
