A 28-year-old man in India was arrested for allegedly murdering his mother after the victim refused to pay for his drugs and threatened to report him to the cops.

The suspect, identified by his first name Rohit, lived in the city of Patna in the eastern state of Bihar.

He was arrested after he allegedly set his mother, Ranju Devi, on fire in a brutal attack that happened on the night of Oct.30, local news outlet Times Now news reported.

Investigators found the attack happened after the duo entered into a heated argument over Rohit's use of drugs. Devi refused to pay for her son's drug addiction, and asked him to quit the habit. She also threatened to call the cops and report him to the officials if his addiction continued.

However, Rohit, who was in an inebriated state, poured kerosene over his mother and set her ablaze, Hindustan Times reported.

After noticing smoke coming from the victim's house, the neighbors rushed to the scene, and took her to a nearby hospital. Devi suffered critical burn injuries and succumbed after giving statements to the cops.

The victim's body was sent for an autopsy, a senior investigating officer, Ashok Kumar, said, as per the outlet.

The police have registered a case against the suspect, who was taken into custody. However, it is unclear what charges Rohit would face in connection with the incident.

According to the neighbors, the suspect has attacked his mother several times before the fatal incident.
