A man in India hid under a cot for over six hours to catch his wife’s lover red-handed and then stabbed the latter to death.

The accused, identified as 31-year-old Bharat Kumar, sneaked into his wife’s home Wednesday night and hid under the cot when the woman had gone to a shop. The incident took place in the southern city of Bengaluru.

The wife’s lover, Shivakumar, arrived and the two fell asleep post dinner. Around 3 a.m. local time Thursday (5.30 p.m. EDT, Wednesday), when the woman, identified as Vinutha, went to the bathroom, Kumar lunged out and locked the bathroom door. He then attempted to strangle Shivakumar before stabbing him several times, local daily Deccan Herald reported.

Kumar then opened the bathroom door and got into an argument with his wife. Vinutha entered the bedroom and found Shivakumar lying in a pool of blood. She immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the residence and took Kumar into custody. They also pronounced the victim dead.

Investigation revealed Kumar married Vinutha eight years ago and they have two children. Three years ago, Shivakumar, had come to stay at the couple’s home for a few days while he was job hunting in the city. Even after Shivakumar left, he and Vinutha stayed in touch.

Irked by this, Kumar had a fight with his wife six months ago, following which she left home and started living separately in a rented place. It wasn't clear how the accused and the victim knew each other before the latter stayed at their home.

"Vinutha and Shivakumar stayed in touch, which led to a quarrel between the couple six months ago. Vinutha left the house, and rented a place," police said, The New Indian Express reported. Thursday’s incident took place at her rented house.

The accused remained in jail as of Thursday evening and the charges levied against him were not known.

The incident comes a month after a man in Texas shot his wife’s lover dead before killing himself. The police arrived at a residence after receiving a call from a woman and found two men dead with gunshot wounds. Investigation revealed one of the victims was the caller’s estranged husband and the other was her boyfriend. The husband barged into the home and opened fire at the boyfriend before turning the gun on himself.
