Meghan Markle has come under fire recently for the amounts of money she has reportedly been spending since becoming a member of the Royal Family, and now, her penchant for using the money she has access to has been labeled as “American Wife Syndrome.”

According to Express UK, columnist Allison Pearson, who also claims to have been afflicted with the condition when she first moved to the UK as well, stated that the Duchess of Sussex was certainly another victim of it. She explains in her column that the condition is one where a woman starts off describing a home as quaint—before setting out to change everything about it.

“Like many Americans, I put on a brave face, telling myself it was cute and quaint,” she said of her own experience. “This went on until I was safely married and my work could truly begin. I became so obsessed with house renovations that I even wrote a How-To book, Home UK.”

Among the things she states Americans are usually more accustomed to adding to their new build homes in the US that they likely want to incorporate into their homes in the US are powerful showers, heated floors, walk-in closets, laundry rooms, indoor gyms, wine cellars, yoga studios, home theaters and his-and-her bathrooms, and she said that Markle likely wasn’t any different when she had the chance to renovate her home at Frogmore Cottage, and her runaway refurbishment costs were because of “American Wife Syndrome.”

The amount that was reportedly spent on the refurbishment in total is expected to close to £3 million, with portions of that money coming from taxpayer money. This is in addition to the already jaw-dropping figures that came about from the Duchess’ £330,00 New York City baby shower (which was reportedly paid for by friends like Serena Williams), as well as £787,000 on her designer wardrobe, which does not showcase British designers.

However, a spokesperson for the royal family defended the cost of the Frogmore renovations, stating the home had already been “earmarked” for them, and that any “fixtured and fittings” were paid for directly by Markle and Prince Harry—not taxpayers.
