  • Meghan Markle said tabloids are toxic and should come with a warning just like cigarettes
  • Twitter users slammed the duchess and criticized her because she couldn't handle criticisms
  • Some netizens agreed that tabloids are toxic and people should stop reading them

Meghan Markle minced no words when she criticized the tabloids in her recent engagement, but her move only angered her critics even more.

The Duchess of Sussex appeared at The New York Times DealBook Online Summit Tuesday. At the event, Andrew Ross Sorkin, the editor-at-large and founder of DealBook The New York Times, told her the good things he heard about her being a boss and the "crazy things" he read on the tabloids. Markle then discouraged him from reading the tabloids.

"Well, first, I would urge you not to read tabloids because I don't think that that's healthy for anyone," Markle was quoted by E! News as saying. "Hopefully, one day they come with a warning label like cigarettes do, like, 'This is toxic for your mental health."

Twitter users immediately reacted after learning about Markle's statement. Many of them slammed the duchess because it appeared to them that she couldn't take criticisms and the things being written about her.

"Censorship is what she wants. She can't handle the criticism hence [she] wants to ban anyone who doesn't like her from social media," one commented.

"The same tabloids that Princess Pinocchio was desperate to appear in when she was an actress. The hypocrisy of the woken one is unbelievable," another added.

"Toxic tabloids?? Really? They are only toxic when they are not in your favor," a third user wrote.

Another netizen believed that Markle reacted that way because elites do not want to be criticized and only want public adulation with their privileges. The netizen suggested that elites like Markle should view criticisms as "an ego-balancer," and she should be grateful for them. However, "that requires a high level of awareness," the netizen added.

Meanwhile, several also supported Markle because they agreed that tabloids are not good for one's well-being.

"To be fair, we’ve all known that red banner tabloids have been up to no good for years. They went after Princess Diana, they went after Caroline Flack, they’ve come after her and Harry, and you also had the News Of The World scandal as well," one netizen wrote, agreeing with Markle.

"Hate to say she has a little bit of a point there," a second user added.

"Meghan is right, let's hope someday in the U.K., people stop reading tabloids, and as she said, 'it is toxic for your mental health,'" a third user tweeted.
