Meghan Markle and Prince Harry committed the worst sin in Britain.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been accused of being hypocrite because they deemed themselves eco-warriors but still travel in private jets. They were also criticized for keeping their son Archie from the public and living private lives when they were publicly funded before they renounced their royal titles.

According to Tom McTague, the couple faced hypocrisy accusations by pursuing a “progressive new role” while holding onto the benefits of the royal family. He added that “in Britain, hypocrisy is the killer charge, the worst sin of all.”

“It doesn’t take a royal kremlinologist to work out that you can’t step back from your duties and fully support the person in charge of doling out those duties, or retain the privileges of a constitutionally apolitical institution and promote causes that stray into politics,“ McTague wrote on The Atlantic after the Sussexes announced that they were stepping back as senior members of the royal family.

He said that it was easy to sympathize with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. However, he stressed that “just because everyone is a hypocrite doesn’t make hypocrisy a virtue.”

McTague also noted how Prince Harry and Markle are being political when monarchy is supposed to be apolitical. For instance, their causes like climate change and mental health are not apolitical and these might erode their popularity and make them ordinary individuals.

“Harry and Meghan’s popularity is, in part, tied to this unifying neutrality. Choosing to intervene politically might give them a quick hit of satisfaction but erodes the basis of their popularity,” McTague added.

“Once they start to behave like ordinary people, giving ordinary opinions, then people will treat them as ordinary. Certainly, anyone can understand Harry and Meghan’s desire to be independent, to say what they believe, to give themselves something to do and stand for. But ask any politician: That is not cost free.”

In related news, Prince Harry and Markle agreed to spend summer with Queen Elizabeth II in Balmoral. This time, the Sussexes are reportedly bringing their son, Archie, along.
