Meghan Markle and Serena Williams have a special bond. They’re there for each other for the small moments, as well as their biggest moments — from Markle’s royal wedding to Prince Harry to Williams’ most important tennis matches and more. How and where did the two actually meet, though?

It turns out, they have the Super Bowl to thank for their friendship.

The former actress and the current athlete met at a party for the major football event in 2010 and then again when they both participated in DirecTV’s Beach Bowl flag football event in 2014, which was where they “hit if off,” according to Markle’s now-defunct blog, The Tig.

The Duchess of Sussex revealed, “[We were] taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing and chatting not about tennis or acting but about good old fashioned girly stuff.”

Their friendship all began with a 2010 Super Bowl party and a fun 2014 Super Bowl event, which also had Hannah Davis, Nina Agdal and Shay Mitchell as flag football players.

Sunday’s Super Bowl 53 marks nine years since Williams and Markle first met and will act as a reminder of how much their friendship has grown over that time. Who knows, the 2019 event might just be the start of a beautiful friendship for another pair of celebrities.

You can catch the game, which will see the New England Patriots play the Los Angeles Rams, on Sunday on CBS at 6:30 p.m. EST.
