Meghan Markle has reportedly suffered more attacks from the media compared to Princess Diana, Kate Middleton and Sarah Ferguson.

Every woman who has married a member of the royal family can’t help but grab the attention of the public and the press. She instantly becomes a star, and Princess Diana, Middleton, Ferguson and Markle have all experienced this.

The Duchess of Cambridge was once dubbed “Waity Katie,” while the Duchess of York was criticized for her weight. On the other hand, the late Princess of Wales had to deal with constant paparazzi pursuit. However, among the four, Markle apparently had it worse.

Marlene Koenig told Vanity Fair that the stories about the Duchess of Sussex are “much more of an attack” and “it’s a pile-on.” Many believe that this could be due to her being a woman of color.

“You see it in the reporting about Meghan, but people don’t want to speak honestly about the real issue: they don’t believe a black woman has a place in the royal family,” Maiysha Kai, managing editor of the Root’s fashion and beauty site the Glow Up, said. “There is this sense that she’s never going to be enough.”

Britt Stephens, content director of PopSugar’s celebrity and entertainment division, expressed in an op-ed published in December how African-American women like them “can read between the lines” of the “difficult” rumors.

“Black women are doubly punished for exhibiting the traits that come from having such a relentless work ethic,” she wrote. “Having ambition and drive make us ‘overbearing’; being assertive makes us ‘angry’; showing authority makes us ‘hostile’; and suggesting change makes us ‘rude,’ ‘demanding,’ or, even worse, ‘ungrateful.’”

A number of netizens also noticed how the press is nitpicking Markle more than Middleton. According to some of them the British media is “ruthless” and “brutal” to Prince Harry’s wife.

Back in February, the Duchess of Cambridge attended BAFTAs with Prince William wearing a white one-shoulder Alexander McQueen dress. Those who saw Middleton praised her because she looked like a “goddess.” For them, the future queen was “angelic” and “stunning.”

However, a few months back, Markle was seen wearing a similar dress. The Duchess of Sussex donned a black one-shoulder Givenchy gown at the British Fashion Awards, but the tabloids criticized her for breaking royal protocol, which sparked a double standard debate involving the two duchesses.

Just recently, Prince Harry and Markle have been removed from the Kensington Palace social media accounts just as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their official Instagram. A number of netizens said that they are unfollowing Kensington Palace, which may lead to Prince William and Middleton losing followers.
